Sofia + Eli | Tilden Park Wedding, Berkeley CA

Life is full of surprises.  I was looking forward to a very quiet non-eventful Fourth of July weekend (read: no scheduled work!) when I received a sweet call from even sweeter  lady who needed a  photographer, soon, for her daughter’s wedding. How soon, I asked, with a raised eyebrow? Like, in 2-weeks-soon, she replied. Oh wow. Ohhkay. Why not?

Now for those who know me – you know I’m a planner. In a huge way.  I plan for contingencies too. But even my Plan B’s have a Plan B. I’m THAT type of  person.  I love checklists and timelines and knowing what’s going to happen next.  Of course, life isn’t like that. We don’t live in a sealed box. We don’t live fairy tales with pre-written happy endings.  Life throws us curves balls, paths are twisted and unpaved, and wind blows the way it wants to.  So, coming into this wedding having *not* met the couple previously was a little bit out of my comfort zone. But I did it anyway.

Open yourself to life’s surprises. Though a few will bring pain, others will bring joys you never knew you were missing.   I read this on a poster once. I think.

Well, back to Sofia and Eli’s wedding. What can I say? It was beautiful. It was full of family love. Twists and turns. A little drama at the start (late bride and groom – where were they??? - everyone wondered). Tons of spirit (Imagine all the family and friends humming  ”Here comes the Bride”). A dash of humor (Cheez Whiz as a wedding gift?) And plenty of love. It was practically bursting at the seams.

This wedding was very casual, go with the flow, very que sera sera. Friends and relatives dragged the chairs out moment before the wedding. The uncle was both minister and caterer. Guests brought their favorite salad and entree to share. A good friend provided awesome jazz guitar music. The bride quickly braided her to the side a few minutes before the ceremony. And you know what? It was awesome. Because sometimes the details don’t matter. And letting go of them allows you to focus on what really does.

Here’s a sneak peek from Eli and Sofia’s wedding. To quote the Maid of Honor’s speech – here’s to a lifetime of never giving up on each other. Congratulations and Best Wishes!
